As a South Shore MA family photographer, one of the most common questions I get is: “What happens if it’s cloudy for our session?” While golden hour on a sunny evening is dreamy and warm, overcast days offer their own kind of magic — and in many ways, they give us even more creative freedom.
Sunny Days: The Beauty of Light and Glow
There’s no denying that sunny sessions have their perks. On a clear evening, that glowing light near sunset wraps around your family, creating golden highlights and depth that look like magic. For a South Shore MA family photographer, that kind of warmth is perfect for creating vibrant, light-filled images.
However, with that direct sun also come some limitations. We have to be more selective with our angles to avoid harsh shadows, squinting eyes, or uneven lighting across faces. That’s where the magic of overcast skies comes in.
The Perks of Overcast: Like a Giant Soft Box
On an overcast day, the clouds act like a giant soft box, diffusing sunlight and creating even, flattering light in any direction. For a South Shore MA family photographer, this kind of lighting is an unexpected gift. It means I’m not limited to keeping the sun behind my subjects — instead, I can shoot from any angle and have soft, even light across every face, in every shot.
This is especially helpful at the beach during sunset (for east coast shoots). When the sun is harsh, I’m often restricted in my ability to place families with their backs to the water, (allowing me to capture both their faces and the waves behind them). But on a cloudy day, I can have families’ backs to the ocean, enabling me to capture the beautiful waves, and still have beautifully flattering light across their faces — even during golden hour.
More Flexibility, More Creativity
Overcast sessions give me full flexibility to:
Shoot in any direction — no sun in the eyes or patchy shadows. I’m able to place subjects with their backs to the water, which isn’t always possible on a sunny day. Keep everyone comfortable — no squinting or intense heat from direct sun. Use the full beach setting, from dunes to shore, without having to avoid too harsh lighting conditions.
This freedom often allows for more natural moments, more movement, and less fuss about posing in just the right direction.
When Clouds Aren’t Ideal
Of course, not every overcast sky is equal. Thick, stormy clouds can reduce brightness overall, sometimes giving a slightly moodier feel. But as a South Shore MA family photographer, I come prepared with the right gear and editing approach to keep your photos looking bright, clean, and timeless — no matter what the sky looks like.
I always remind my families that cloudy days don’t mean dull photos. In fact, they often give us more opportunities to play with background, composition, and scenery — especially along South Shore’s beautiful coastlines.
Whether we’re chasing that warm glow or embracing a cloudy sky, you can trust that your photos will reflect your family’s joy and connection. As a South Shore MA family photographer, my goal is to make you feel relaxed, natural, and beautifully lit — in any weather.
