In photographing natural light, there are many different kinds of natural light, and many different approaches on how to capture it. In your search of the Best South Shore Ma Photographer, make sure your photographer is well-versed in the various different types of natural light, so they can guide you on the best time of day, location, and time of year to book your session to achieve that particular kind of light, and that they have excellent control of light in their photography skill set, so they can expertly capture that particular kind of light, without making the image appear hazy, cloudy, out of focus, or with all the highlights blown out (or a white washed, over exposed look). While this “white washing” blowing out the highlights can be a style of sorts, when it comes down to real photography skills, the fact is you are “losing data” at this point, in the image, in other words making it a much less interesting photo.

As the Best South Shore Ma Photographer, I help to inform my clients about all the different kinds of natural light, so that they can then choose the exact style they’re going for, and we can plan our session accordingly to capture themselves and their families in that exact type of light, in the most flattering way.

Different kinds of Natural Light – Bright vs Golden Hour Light

The Best South Shore Ma Photographer will know various different kinds of natural light and how to capture them effectively. While there are MANY different kinds of natural light, just two we will cover here, are bright light vs golden hour light.

Bright Light – Best South Shore Ma Photographer

What is bright light? When referring to natural (or sun sourced) light, bright light is the sunlight that is best visualized in the early morning into midday sun. It is clear, bright, without any major color cast. This type of light is gorgeous. A lot of photographers are reluctant to shoot in early morning or midday sun because of the potential for harsh shadows or the raccoon eye effect when the sun is positioned too overhead. While this can be a very real problem, in your search for the Best South Shore Ma Photographer, be sure that your photographer can execute beautiful pictures in this type of light. How do you know if your photographer is capable of this? Check their social media profiles and portfolio. If they ONLY have golden hour (very golden toned light) photos, or if they DO have bright light images but they appear to be out of focus (the subject is not very clear), or hazy, or with the highlights blown out, you should be very cautious proceeding in these cases, if what you’re after is beautiful bright light images.

Golden Hour Light – Best South Shore Ma Photographer

In contrast to bright light, another very common type of natural light photographers love to shoot in (and likely the most common of all) is golden hour light. What is golden hour light, and why is it so popular to shoot in among photographers? Golden hour light is that very yellow/amber-toned light, and the light is very low on the horizon. This type of light happens roughly an hour before or an hour after sunset and sunrise, respectively. So why is it so popular to shoot in among photographers? Golden hour light is so popular to shoot in among photographers because it is not only flattering on the subject, but it is also very easy to shoot in this type of light. The power of the light at this time is much less, meaning it is much easier to control on the camera side. For these reasons, it is likely the most popular light in to shoot for photographers.
